How to use it in class
- Drag either hand. With geared hands on, the hour hand creeps forward as the minute hand goes round, just like a real clock. At quarter to 4 it is nearly on the 4.
- Quiz the class. Turn on quiz mode, press Random time, and ask the class to read the clock before you reveal the answer.
- Go full screen on the whiteboard. In full screen, the space bar gives a new random time.
- Snap to hours, half hours, quarter hours, 5 minutes or 1 minute to match what your class is learning.
Teaching tips
- Past and to: shading the right half “past” and the left half “to” helps children see why 20 to 5 is on the left.
- Minutes around the outside (5, 10, 15…) bridge the gap between the numbers on the face and the minutes past the hour.
- Turn geared hands off to show a common mistake: the hour hand pointing straight at the number when it should be part-way to the next one.
- UK or US wording: switch between “quarter past” and “quarter after”, and between 12-hour and 24-hour digital times.
